Revision of Citizenship Rules By IRCC Resulting in New More Canadians

The rule for the citizenship rules was revised in October 2017 due to elevation in applications which is recorded 130 per cent in 9 months. The rate of successful citizenship applicants have went up due relaxation in rules by the government of Canada.

With the closure of this month, IRCC have estimated that around 152,000 aspirants have been given citizenship status since the changes were acknowledged. This has also diminished the time limit a permanent resident holder has to present in Canada to be able to apply for citizenship.

In the past scenario the candidates have to spend around four years minimum out of six years in Canada. This limit was curtailed to three out of five years in October 11, 2017.

There is significant increase in the number of applications for citizenship in the recent nine months. The number reached to 242,680 applications and hike of more than130 per cent compared to the 102,261 applications received over same period in 2016-2017.

The amendments involved in legislation Bill C-6 permitted the candidates to claim up to 365 days towards the three-year physical presence requirement, who have devoted some five years living in Canada as a temporary residents or a protected person. Each day spent is counted as a half day.

Canada has also set-up limitation on language and knowledge requirements for applicants between 14to 64 years of age applying to Canada citizenship. In the citizenship week Canada’s Immigration Minister, Ahmed Hussen which ran for October 14 to 3 has remarked that the changes in citizenship rules is giving optimistic results.

The Hussen stated that the government has introduced significant changes to Citizenship Act under Bill C-6 in order to enable the citizens who want to become citizen of Canada with flexibility and to meet the needs of the same. He also declared that these changes will get to create a difference after one-year of time period.
