Ontario to target candidates with Tech Experience in the Next Draw

Finally, the Ontario Government has let the cat out of the bag with its new disclosures about nominating Express Entry candidates having work experience in the technology sector for permanent residence.  A few months back Ontario announced that it is planning to create a specific stream for tech workers. Now, as an alternative, it is planning to announce targeted draws for Express Entry candidates with specific work experience in six tech-related occupations through its Human Capital Priorities Stream.

The Canadian Express Entry system is considered as the main source to invite International foreign workers with specific skills and work experience and looks after the pools of candidates for the three economic Immigration categories – Federal Skilled Worker Class, Federal Skilled Trades Class, and Canadian Experience Class.

Candidates who have applied under these programs get into the Express Entry pool where they are rewarded with points under the Comprehensive Ranking system (CRS).  The score is given to a candidate on the factors – age, education, skilled work experience, and English/French proficiency. Express Entry candidates get additional 600 points in their overall score if they get provincial nomination resulting into an assertion of receiving an invitation to apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

Talking about the figures of the last year, Ontario was the province with 65% of the new immigrants that got admitted through the Express Entry system. Even, it is considered a well-known destination for newcomers including the majority of them through the Express Entry system.

In order to consider an invitation via OINP tech draw, applicants have to create an express entry profile first. The demand of tech industry is high in Ontario as it is presently dealing with a shortage of tech workers and the prediction is that around 220,000 skilled workers are in demand in Canada’s Information and Communication technology sector by 2021. The OINP under Human Capital priorities Stream seeks express entry pool for applicants that match with eligibility criteria. Eligible candidates with work experience in one of the below-given occupations are targeted under OINP tech draws:

  • Software engineers and designers (NOC 2173)
  • Computer programmers and interactive media developers (NOC 2174)
  • Computer engineers (NOC 2147)
  • Web designers and developers (NOC 2175)
  • Database analysts and data administrators (NOC 2172)
  • Computer and information systems managers (NOC 0213)

The OINP mentioned that these six occupations reflect the current need and were chosen after consultation with employers and other stakeholders in the province.  You don’t need a job offer in the Human capital Priorities Stream and candidates who get selected by the OINP receives a Notification of Interest and provided with 45 days to apply for an Ontario provincial nomination.  The tech-draw of Ontario province is a great opportunity for Express Entry candidates as the province has shown interest in inviting Express Entry candidates with even low scores through its Human Capital Priorities Stream.
