Ontario issued 1,773 invitations under its Tech Draw held on Thursday, August 1, 2019. Invitations were given to the express entry candidates having work experience in one of the six targeted occupations with CRS score as low as 435. Since its inception in July, the draw took place for the second time and total 3,396 Express Entry candidates have received invitations or Notifications of Interest (NOIs).

Ontario is known as Tech hub of Canada which includes major cities of Toronto, Ottawa, and Waterloo, and with the help of Tech Draws, the province is expecting to meet the shortage of labor needs in the sector. As per the CBRE Scoring Tech Talent, over 80,000 tech jobs have been introduced in Toronto, the capital city of Ontario in the last five years.

With Tech Draws, the province invites eligible candidates from the Federal Express Entry Pool to apply for provincial nomination. Canada Express Entry system is a popular source for International skilled workers with a provincial nomination certificate as they are rewarded with 600 additional points in their overall CRS score, ensuring an invitation to apply for Canadian permanent residence.

There is no requirement of a job offer under Express Entry system and candidates can apply for permanent residence if they are eligible under three main economic categories – Federal Skilled Worker Class, Federal Skilled Trades Class or Canadian Experience Class.  Candidates with high-ranking scores are issued with an invitation to apply for permanent residency through regular draws that happen fortnight. Candidates looking for Ontario invitation have to submit an Express Entry profile.

Candidates from IT backgrounds and with high scores have witnessed success through Express Entry; numerous provincial streams allow candidates with Low CRS to receive an invitation to apply for Canada permanent residence.

Express Entry candidates having work experience in one of the six tech occupations are targeted by Tech draws:

1.    Software engineers and designers (NOC 2173)

2.    Computer programmers and interactive media developers (NOC 2174)

3.    Computer engineers (NOC 2147)

4.    Web designers and developers (NOC 2175)

5.    Database analysts and data administrators (NOC 2172)

6.    Computer and information systems managers (NOC 0213)

Tech Draws are conducted under Ontario’s Human Capital Priorities Stream. This stream is managed by Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) that allows the province to select Express Entry candidates. Candidates who received invitations to apply for permanent residence in the latest Tech Draw had created their Express Entry profile between August 1, 2018, and August 1, 2019.
