Canada Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is for applicants who have suitable trade skills as an alternative to educational qualifications. This visa program allows individuals with job offers or appropriate certification, to work for certain high-demand occupation categories like Construction, Electrical, Industrial, Agriculture, Maintenance Supervisors and Technical Jobs.

What you need to be eligible for the Visa Program?

Basic Requirements
To be eligible for this economic program under Express Entry, one has to:

  • Have Work Experience of at least 2 years.
  • Have Proficient English language skills.
  • Hold a job offer form a Canadian employer.
  • Have the required skills for the job position available in the National Occupational Classification (NOC).
  • Have a full time employment offer or a certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority.

How Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) works?

For applying under Federal Skilled Trades Program, the following steps are to be followed :

  1. Potential candidates have to complete an online Express Entry profile and upon meeting the requirements, they are accepted into a pool of candidates.
  2. Candidates are ranked against others in the pool using a point-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
  3. Candidates with the highest scores in the pool are issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
  4. After receiving ITA, one can file for Permanent Residency for Canada.

There are in total 43 occupations in this group which are subdivided into two i.e. category A and Category B.

Category A

Category A has a cap of 100 applications as these are occupations of moderate labor market need.

7205 Contractors and supervisors, other construction trades, installers, repairers and servicers
7271 Carpenters
7301 Contractors and supervisors, mechanic trades
7302 Contractors and supervisors, heavy equipment operator crews
8211 Supervisors, logging and forestry
8221 Supervisors, mining and quarrying
8222 Contractors and supervisors, oil and gas drilling services
8241 Logging machinery operators
8252 Agricultural service contractors, farm supervisors and specialized livestock workers
9211 Supervisors, mineral and metal processing
9212 Supervisors, petroleum, gas and chemical processing and utilities
9214 Supervisors, plastic and rubber products manufacturing
9231 Central control and process operators, mineral and metal processing
9241 Power engineers and power systems operators
9243 Water and waste treatment plant operators

 
Highest ranked profile in the candidate pool will be provided an ITA.

It consists of occupations which are in demand.

8231 Underground production and development miners
8232 Oil and gas well drillers, servicers, testers and related workers
9232 Petroleum, gas and chemical process operator

How much time does the process takes?

The duration for the visa process to complete depends upon the applicant’s profile however; Citizenship and Immigration (CIC) Canada, processes majority of the applications in six months or above.
